About Lexington
Hosrse Capital of the World
The City
Lexington, Kentucky lies in the heart of beautiful Bluegrass Country, home to world famous thoroughbred horses, great bourbon, beautiful horse farms and big-time college basketball. It was the first city in the nation to create an urban service boundary to protect its famous countryside. The marriage of urban amenities downtown and a spectacular countryside just minutes away marks Lexington as a truly distinctive community.
The city currently has a population in excess of 270,000 (2006), a median age of 35.1 and a growth rate of 3.9%. The 2010 World Equestrian Games will bring an estimated 300,000 people from all over the world to Lexington and our surrounding counties.
Lexington serves as the regional core of central and eastern Kentucky and, as such, functions as the medical and financial center of the area.
Located at the intersection of Interstate Highways I-64 and I-75 [map page], two-thirds of the U.S. population live within a day's drive of Lexington.
